In August 1961, the BMW 700 Sport is introduced to the international media at the NÃÂarburgring. It is the sports version of the BMW 700 Coupe that hit the market two years earlier. The engine of the race version delivers 40bhp at 5,700 rpm, accelerating the coupe from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 20 seconds and to a top speed of 135 km/h.

In no time at all, the car that motor racing enthusiasts are to nickname â┚¬Ã‹Å“The Tiny Wrathful Oneâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢, begins the career that will make it one of the racing legends of the early 1960s. In 1960, Hans Stuck senior wins the German Hill Climb Championship at the wheel of the BMW 700. Further wins and titles follow, among them a class win in the 1961 Mille Miglia.

In March 1963, the type designation for this model is changed to BMW 700 CS. For BMW, the BMW 700 symbolises the companyâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢s economical recovery following the difficult 1950s and represents the beginning of the â┚¬Ã‹Å“Projekt Mittelwagenâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ and the successful â┚¬Ã‹Å“Neue Klasseâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ â┚¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ the new class of BMW cars.

Perhaps there were only 7000 convertibles made:

The BMW 700 came available in 1959. It was available as 2 door sedan or coupe.
It had a two cylinder engine with 30 HP. In 1960 a sport coupe with 40 HP came
available and a convertible was introduced. In 1962 BMW introduced the 700
luxury LS sedan. The convertible was now also available. In 1964 a coupe LS came
available and the standard sedan and coupe went out of production.
The convertible also went out of production a few months later. The LS models
went out of production in 1965. There were a total of 180.000 of these cars made.
