Mate of mine just sold his 318is and is interested in either the 328 or the M3 3.0 litre. Heard there are some issues on the 3.2 evo model to do with the vanos unit?
Anyway what should me and my mate be looking out for when looking at potentional 328 or M3 models in regards to engines, any troubles with the engines we should know about? If doing a test drive what should we be looking out for?
Cheers.
Help and advice on E36 328's or M3's.

If you're mate is looking for a 328i or a m3... let him decide what he wants first, as the 328, m3 and m3 evo all have some inherent problems... which there are too many to go into detail when someone hasnt chosen a car they actually would like.
but in summary-
328i - check for nikasil block - 328is are pretty solid.
m3 - check for Service history- too many things to take a chance on, unless they are really cheap.
m3 evo - check vanos (requires changing ever so often), also notchy 6 speed gear box and again service history.
other than that log onto www.e36coupe.co.uk/forum - loads of information there.
