The 318i has 115 BHP and the 325i has 192 BHP.

I recomend the 325i as a 6 cylinder engine is the best.

e30 325i(m20) = 171bhp e36 325i (m50) = 192bhp e36 318i = 113bhp, the e36 318i is a 4 cylinder 8 valve, the e30 325i is a 12 valve 6 cylinder and the e36 325i is a 24 valve 6 cylinder(very rapid)
hope this helps! in other words mate STICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got an E36 318i and must say it's perfectly adequate for getting around and carrying stuff.

However it's a lot less fun than the E30 (which is a mere 318i) - I drive the E30 for fun and use the E36 when I just want to get somewhere.

Going from a 2.5 6-pot, auto or not, will be a bit step down IMO.

In comparison though, economy will be very good....

Im not even sure that he will get too much improvement in fuel economy as the 318s take some pushing along!!

You will find the 318i quite slow especially mid range, your 325 is much torquier and make a much nicer sound. However if you go for the 318 coupe which has the twin cam 16 valve engine then the difference will be much smaller, especially as you are going from Auto to Manual. You will also find the 4 cylinder car will rev much quicker and nicer, less raspy but gives a little more of a hot hatch feeling. My last 2 cars have been M3's, 3.0 and 3.2 but I miss the 4 cylinder models for their lightness.
