Does anyone know if a J reg 320i would be belt or chain driven please. My dads looking at getting one.

it should still be the same m50 engine in the 5 series so it would still be chain i think

thats around the time they went from belt M20 to chain M50's

As Simon13 says, need to see the engine. Registration date can be many months later than the build date.
You can't mistake the two engines though, M20 (belt) has an aluminium rocker cover in natural colour, spark plug leads and an ignition coil, while M50 (chain) has large plastic covers on top of the engine in black and silver, and no visible ignition components.
