E46 v E36

I'm thinking of getting rid of my wife's 318i se 2000,to tell the truth it's been nothing but hassle,I've spent an absolute fortune on it.In the past I've owned a 316i E36 and a318is E36 both great cars,all be it the 316i was gutless but it was stil a good all round great car.my question is,did I buy a Friday night E46 or was the E36 a better car,I'll be looking for 4 pot cars depending on the results of this post.

I had an e36 318ti sport and it was the dogs 
Really good fun and very reliable but started to go down hill rather fast.
I have had two e46 330 `s (hopefully still have one) and both marks are a big jump from the e-30 in every day driving and both are very cheap to maintain .
