Hi everyone,
so last week my partner bought a E87 from an auction... and if you aren't already holding your head in dismay (personally it's way too modern for me with its push button start!) please read on..
'Hi all, I bought a 2005 E87 with a 116i N45 engine from the auctions last week, the car was delivered and the driver started the car, drove it off the ramp and left it to idle while paperwork was completed. I jumped in, drove a few hundred yards to where it would be parked and plucked the key out without pushing it in first (i've never had one of these start button cars!)- there was a loud bang (that of a misfire and the engine stopped) when I re-started the car it was running very lumpy and sounded to be missing on several cylinders. I plugged it in to a snapon modis computer and it showed several codes relating to misfires and one on vanos intake. After scrolling the web trying to find a explanation I put it down to the fact the timing chain had skipped a tooth so ordered a timing kit and the timing tools in order to try and fix the issue. I re-timed the engine in accordance with the instructions and turned over by hand several rotations with nothing out the ordinary occurring. When I cranked the engine with the ignition coils disconnected in order to bring the oil pressure up I heard a knocking after several rotations of the engine. I stopped, repeated the process and again after several rotations the knocking emerged.
I'm baffled on where to go from here.. whether to spend out on new vanos pulleys and solonoids incase the valves have been damaged along the way? or to break the car for spares and re-gain my funds that way.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.'
Many thanks!

hi, yes it has ran since doing the timing chain, it’s runnig lumpy with the same knocking, took the rocker cover off to listen to the engine to make sure it wasn’t valve contact and all the knocking is coming from the top vanos pulley. The timing wasn’t out, he’s checked it 4 times and it seems to be bang on.
And yeah aimlessrock, I think he’s preferring my 1986 e30 now haha!
Many thanks!
