Engine out and head off I believe, although I've never done one.
Have you phoned BMW and asked if its due a recall?

N47.
Never has a recall on timing chains although many have had good will or warranty repairs by now.
The replacement parts needed have been revised several times.
To replace all the guide and chains the official BMW method is to remove the engine, then remove the head and sump so the lower timing cover can be removed to access all the chains and guides BUT you can cheat by leaving the engine in the car, pulling the gearbox and sump off then removing the lower timing cover and replacing the chains and guides in situ.
I have done both methods many times.

Are they just as likely to fail again after being replaced?

Good old N47 engines! I did consider this to be BMWs worst (current) engine at one point... Then the N43 happened!
Not done one of the chains in situ like Barry as we always remove them. Not a difficult job for a competent mechanic but above the ability of most "back street" garages
