I knew a guy who had an m6 coupe. We went to centre parcs with the kids. They arrived in his wife's RAV4!!!!
That's why the m5 sold more and makes so much more sense. All the 6's are cheap for a reason, why would you want an impractical M6 when an m5 does virtually the same job and you can ferry the family in comfort. The same applies to a 630i/d to a 530i/d really.
Add that to the fact the 645/650 are both rocket ships in their own right but without the savage "M" bills and a 650 is the "wise" choice in my book.

I think they've mellowed a bit but I've been trying to think as to why the e24 sold in such large numbers compared to the e12/28. Yet the e63 six was relatively low numbers by comparison to the e60.
And i can only surmise that the e24 (in my eyes) was the prettiest car BMW ever made. And the five of that era was nice but a bit plain Jane. Hence executives chose it for its looks over practicality.
The e63 is not a car I can say is pretty. Then nor is the e60 really (despite owning one) so you may as well go practical and have the benefits.
Plus executives of today mostly have families, and they need the space of the fives. Back in the 80's, young execs were yuppies with no kids and cash to burn! Ramming a line of coke up ones hooter, then piloting a 635csi to some big haired bints penthouse, was the order or the day.

And there lies an underlying image issue. Black rims on a black car with black leather! Just screams council to me. Put one in silver, grey or even orient blue, on a nice set of silver rims with a contrasting trim makes them for me. Call me boring but I fucking hate black rims!! Now where's Oz? He knows how I feel.......ross_jsy wrote:I love the big 6, there's a black on black with black rims I see quite often and it just has so much presence.

I do like the 4 door six. It it the GT? I loved that 4 door coupe merc introduced a few years back now and it took a bit of time for Munich to match it but I think it really works. That's more a bit of me!

Between touching yourself over the counciled 6 & Jap scrap, you're starting to out yourself as a pleb, Ross.

Oh no it looks massively council, complimented by the carbon BMW and M6 badge on the back, and the "sleeved" owner behind the wheel, but there is no denying it has a lot of presence.
Bab, Impreza is up for sale. Want to guess what colour my rims are (not out of choice)
Oh and it's getting replaced by an e30 that has seen some council/"track slag" action

Cant be as bad as the A Class AMG. The carbon effect dash is horrendous.
Please tell me the rimz are gold or white!?
O, very good. What's the story with this new yoke, any pictures?

Black rims on a red Impreza, it's as council as can be! Chucked a bucket of water over it yesterday:

It's an 89 325i, bit of headwork, 40% diff, Mazda 4 pots and a few other bits and bobs. It's tattier than I would have liked but I have been trying to get a 2 door for 3 years locally now. Bought it off a friend. Plan is to sort the body work out a bit, give it a clean and fix some dubious mods and use it as a daily/track toy:

'Colin McRae' spec is the most council but that is a close 2nd!
Would it not have been easier to bring one over from the mainland? Looks like a good base for some pedo action.

I won't be peadoing it, it's used and abused and will stay like that, but finished to a standard I am happy with.
It's hassle. Cost of getting there, bringing it over, paying import tax (I've always fiddled that when I've brought vehicles in like a true Jerseyman) and getting it through DVS all add up. Easily adds a grand to the purchase price and all UK cars tend to be a bit titanic spec underneath compared to Jersey turds as we have a better climate/don't salt the roads.
And that's if DVS don't want to kick up a fuss over something stupid, which they have been known to do, especially with older cars.
Would rather keep that grand in my pocket, not have the worries of registering it and spend it on a local turd. I've known this car for the last year or so and its been a good runner for my friend

Anything with that V10 and that gearbox plus those brakes has utterly insane running costs. Parts are literally cold sweat/sit down/cry and the fuel economy makes a 1973 XJ12 look reasonable. They're horrid to drive in town and there are few places where the (staggering) performance can really be used. They are undoubtedly one of BMW's 'look what we can' do moments, leaving the next owner to pick up the four figures repair/service bills.
You can probably run a Testarossa for less.

If you want to bankrupt yourself while looking good then your better off going for the old sl55 230 model with the supercharged v8 and auto box. They have similarly expensive consumables (struts leak and they are 1k a piece).
Have one in my care at the moment...jonb wrote:If you want to bankrupt yourself while looking good then your better off going for the old sl55 230 model with the supercharged v8 and auto box. They have similarly expensive consumables (struts leak and they are 1k a piece).
The ABC struts and ABC pump are obvious expensive weak points but there are places that refurb the pumps and shocks nowadays for a fraction of the price...But still pricey.
These being a technological tour de force of their time, theres plenty of other stuff to go wrong..
But that engine 'almost' makes it all worthwhile!
