My e36 tried to strand me a few weeks ago when i couldn't get the car started at all the barrel just jammed and wouldn't turn. It had been spinning on me for some time before. As a bodge i've had the ignition switch removed and have been starting it that way with a screw driver....how posh.
I've bought a replacement barrel but i can't get the old one out. It just spins, jams basically everything it shouldn't do. I've been reading online that if you suffer a complete barrel failure then the holder needs to be changed aswell? eek, looks a fair amount of work to change and i'm fearing that i've left mine too long and its failed.
Anyone done this or had same problem? Looks to be a common fault

I had this problem on my e36 a year ago. I drilled a hole in the barrel holder to locate the locking tab, then pressed it with a screwdriver and removed the barrel. It's a bodge but it worked and has been fine since.
