My E46 does like to slurp oil a bit too much.It doesn't smoke in normal driving/ doesn't smell, but if you clout it, you can notice a bit of shit coming out (especially at night if there is a car with headlights on behind).
Is this fairly typical of a foiked OSV?

Not got any rough running problems at all, but it does have a major oil thirst, i would say 2-3 litres per 1000 miles.
I also despise the fly by wire throttle in these turds, never have I stalled a car so much in my life.

I blame the clutch delay valve
Hated it on the e39 and my current e46
Plan is to ditch it as well as the dual mass

Yeah my mate has a 330i and that likes a bit of a drink too.
The CDV is cack. The electronic throttle is equally gay as you can't hold it at constant revs too much when slipping the clutch and it stalls unless you want to drive like a deaf pensioner and hold the revs at 5k.
Because of the poxy CDV and the DSC you can't even punish the coont by lighting up the rears in anger when you re-start it
Plus it feels like it wouldn't be able to pull a randy dog off your mother anyway.
Having said all that, it has been a reliable turd that I've put around 25k on since buying it nearly 2 years ago with just preventative maintenance like water pump & stat and then some new front shocks & arms. Inner tie rod balljoint was an advisory on the last MOT so need to get that done as it does feel a bit wooly and clunky in the steering dept. I would forgive it the thirst (on fuel) if it had the guts to match. Defo should have got the 330, but I grew sick of looking at rusty arch tosh for too much money and gave in.

Its designed to save the driveline in sacrifice of a clutch friction plate. Stops people clutch kicking and sending shocks down the line.
We took one off for a friend of mines and this was the result!

Still worth the effort, this is a one off!

I have this problem with my S Type,interested in a fix!E30BeemerLad wrote:

Sometimes I can slip the clutch in at idle and then add throttle(learnt the technique with HGV's!)but the thing usually bogs down and stalls, then seems to run rich when re-started...
I was thinking(always an issue with me..)that it was TPS or ECU related, but I guess that drive by wire has no TPS?

Todays throttle pedals are nothing more than an instrument of telling the ECU to increase/decrease torque.

.....and ideally linked to a slushbox to reduce 'driver imput'?Demlotcrew wrote:Todays throttle pedals are nothing more than an instrument of telling the ECU to increase/decrease torque.

Not in that way no, FBW is actually a very good advancement.
I took the CDV out of mine, and then refitted it. E46's have particularly crap driveshafts with CV's that wear and with the CDV removed I noticed the 'E46 clonk' as you dip the clutch and engage first. I can't say the clutch action was much better either but they've all got nasty dual mass flywheel nonsense and the self adjusting clutch bullshit. I refitted mine and it helped, but i don't do traffic light heroes stuff!
I put a new clutch in my E36 318i very recently - it's feather light, smooth and doesn't have a DMF.
Any M54 still on the original cyclone valve and breather pipes will need them all replacing and even earlier E60's are now having them changed. The valve is one issue but the rubber pipes turning into liquorice is another - just change the whole lot. Don't try to do it with the inlet manifold on - take the rear pollen filter housing off and draw the manifold up and off to give yourself about 1000 times more room. It's about 3 hours of moderate language/boredom but it's worth doing.

Really struggle to see how the CDV redusces driveline recoil.
Take it off, you won't regret it.
