I am planning to replace most of the gear linkage parts on my E46 330i on Wednesday. I've done it on my E30 before and it's quite an easy job once the exhaust and prop shaft are out of the way. I did a bit of research and it would appear that the most tricky bit of this is likely to be getting the exhaust off, someone on one site I found said that this was the thing they hated most having to do on their e46!

So I thought I'd have a quick precursory look at my exhaust bolts to see what state they are in. This is what I found:

Now they don't look like they are going anywhere in a hurry. Any ideas for getting them off or do they look too far gone to save? I have new nuts but not new studs so if I knacker them I'll be needing to get new ones. I've read that replacing the studs is a right ball ache as they have to be pressed or drilled out which doesn't sound like much fun.

Another option would be to try to sort the gear linkage out without removing the exhaust, I have heard that it is possible to remove the heatshield above the exhaust without removing the exhaust itself but I then still have to get past the prop which may be impossible to detach from the gearbox with the exhaust in place?

Final option is to take the car to an exhaust place and get them to remove the nuts and studs and replace with new bolts and nuts then I can easily get the exhaust off at home.

What do think?
