So I bought an e46 Touring 330i (2000 model) a month or two ago.
Unfortunately no history etc but it was running well except for some electrical glitches.
Anyway, last time I used the car there were no issues, got in today and the car was completely dead when I turned they key. So I jumped started it and it started perfectly...
Then when I got in and started to drive, turning the steering wheel there was an awful groaning sound... that did not go away and I could smell burning rubber.
I know nothing about these cars, what should I be looking getting repaired / replaced.
Thanks for any help and advice...

Sounds like your PAS pump/alternator drive belt is goosed.

Ok, so is it an easy fix for a non mechanic like myself or do I need to send it in and get robbed blind?

They are usually fairly straightforward to replace. On an E46, they are probably 'serpentine' belts, and it's important to ensure you get one the correct width (same number of grooves as the pulleys) or it will fly off again in no time.
