Compared to a standard e30 cab are these much more civilised? Not just to drive but also for rear seat passengers with the top down

All 4 seat cabrios are pretty horrible for rear seat passengers in terms of buffeting, even brand new stuff. Certainly for any distance on a motorway.
I don't know about room in the back, but the e36 cabrio feels a lot stiffer than an e30, and imho is nicer to drive as a consequence.

The E36 cabrio is much more refined than an E30 cabrio. The have a head lining in the roof for a start where as the E30 cabrio hood resembles something from an old pram.

Is chalk and cheese, the E36 is a far more refined car and in convertible trim is nearly as good a drive as a fixed head.

Thanks. I'm getting old and if I'm honest something refined would be nice.
I'm thinking about either a 328 or possibly 323, what do I need to look for both rust and mechanically? I've heard scary things about cylinder liners and dual mass clutches.....

As mentioned far more refined compared to an e30, 328i is the pick of the bunch, the later the year the better, and they do look nice in m-tech form, later cars dont have any cylinder head issues.

A nice* E36 Convertible is a car to buy now. Not the usual 168'000 mile shitter but low owners, unmolested and especially early ones. I sawe a 325i on Ebay on an M plate in Boston green with tan leather, the early type 15 inch 'knuckle' alloys etc. I'd forgotten what they look like. E46's are popular with tattooed sorts right now and that won't change for a long time yet.
*The best of luck with that.

I'm trying to find a nice E36 cab for a customer at the minute.
He wants a 328i red auto with cream leather in very good condition and service history.
There's not many about

I might have an individual velvet blue 328 auto. It needs some work but is unmolested and cheap

I'd like either a 2.5 or a 2.8 equipped car and would like a manual gearbox.
What's the best engine for terms of reliability and minimal chances of big bills?
What should I look for with the transmission?
Rust, I've heard about the arches and under the sill covers (is it possible to check this without removing anything?) - where else should I check.
Any other annoyances such as ABS, hood mechanisms etc, etc?
Cheers.

check the lowest part of the front wings. They wrap under the body and bolt into the floor pan, mud and water sit ontop and they rust.
