Hi folks, I've asked this question on another BMW forum with no luck so thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has any ideas.

I have been having problems getting any sort of software to speak to my car through the OBD1 port.

First thing I tried was an airbag resetting tool, I got power to the tool but it would only give me a communication error code. it has been used on other cars so the tool definately works.

Next was connecting it to a computer via a carsoft program and all I could get was more communication failure notices. This has also been used on other cars without a problem.

I tried to reset the service lights with a jumper wire using the tried and tested methods online, nothing happens.

Finaly i borrowed a universal hand held fault reader which also works on other BMW's and yet more coms errors.

So i have finally accepted that my OBD is not functional and I would really like to know what I can do to cure it so i can reset the airbag light and reset my service lights. As far as I can see all the plug terminal wiring is in order and the contacts have been cleaned. I'm wondering if the ECU could be at fault?

Sounds like you may have a similar set up to my E39, in which case you will need to connect via an ADS interface into the twenty pin diagnostic socket under the bonnet.
SI reset should still work with just a piece of wire though.

Sorry Brian, I'm not sure what you mean. I've been using the round pacman type plug, there is another round socket next to it but wasn't sure what that was for.

I've just googled images of the interface you mean, I think thats what i have got. It's got the round pacman OBD plug that goes into a box with some lights and an RS232 conection at either end. Then I have bought a new cable that goes from one of these rs232 ports to a USB for the computer.

I could scan and reset the air bag ONLY on my old E34 using INPA using a USB OBDII lead with an adaptor even though it was an ADS interface car which was odd.

Ok, I'm getting a bit confused. What does an ADS interface car mean? and whats INPA?
