I have just realised that what I have spent on my recently aquired 325i Sport was the bestv part of what would buy this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-N-BMW-84 ... 1c3d681bcc

Perhaps not the best example, but then a bit more could buy this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1996-BMW-840- ... 2336833662

And now, I am hankering after one!..Has anybody had one?..Is the V12 worth having?...And is there much difference between the 4.0 and the 4.4?..

Check out this link on the Pistonheads, gives you a rough idea of what's involved with the 8 series.

I looked into it a couple of years ago, many parts are specific to the 8 series making them pretty expensive to run on the cheap!

I had one, some 11-12 years ago now. Bought it from a main dealer for all the $$$ but with the warranty - that was a life saver. They're not unreliable but they are very complex (well, not compared to modern shite) and 98% of the parts are 8 Series specific - they are not based on either a 5 or a 7 Series so there are very few interchangeable parts.
Lots of tatty high mileage ones about, not that high miles is an isue if the car is cheap and has been well maintained. The V12 is much, much heavier on fuel than the V8 and the original 5.0 850i is very little faster. 840Ci brakes feel dead at low speeds due to not having enough servo effect. Not overly fast (a 330i is just as quick) but they have loads of grip. Not particularly exciting to drive but they're a car to cruise around in getting admiring glances. :D

Cheers for that...I guess the 850 CSI is the one to have...or perhaps a manual 40/50?..They look great though....I quite like the Dakar Yellow...

A individual late 840ci would be the ideal car.

Does anyone know much about the M8? I have read that the Mclaren F1 V12 is the engine BMW themselves designed to fit in the M8, and then decided to abandon the project, which instead, resulted in a 'de-tuned' version of the M8 i.e. the 850CSI.....but Wikipedia states that the 850CSI 5.6 V12 engine is merely a 'tuned version' of the standard 850 5.0 V12.!!

My real question was whether a standard V12 can be stroked to give say over 400 bhp?..That would make a standard 850CI (not CSI) worth having...as a true performance car, rather than mild GT car...

If you want 400bhp in an 8 series, just fit an S62 from an E39 M5 and manual gearbox to an 840Ci. Should be a straight forward swap as the S62 is based on the M62 fitted to late 840Ci's.

And if that's not enough and you have deep pockets, get an Evolve supercharger conversion for over 600bhp!

Trying to extract big power out of an M70/M72 V12 would be both futile and expensive!

Briiliant!..Thats that one sorted then!..:)...So it means, If I come across a cheapish 8 series I can start planning a little project!

I had an 850CSi - awesome car!!! Used it almost daily for about 5 years!!!
Will def have one again one day!!!

I remember it being discussed on the E31 forum and most seemed to agree with my thoughts, that regardless what model 8 series, I would take a high miler with history/receipts, over a car that has been standing!!! A lot of problems can develop with rarely used 8's!!! And parts aren't cheap!!!

That said, tuning up a cheap 8 is on my list - but it's a long way off yet!!!

Didn't Dips do a twin turbo V12 from an 850??? In a touring maybe??? Dunno if that one got finished though!!!

Alpina took the 850CSI engine and stroked it to 5.7 and got over 400bhp out of it but the torque remained the same. Which is still over 400lbs and if that isn't enough you need your head looking at.

We have just sold a 65k 850CSi for about £26k and there is a big hit list of work including a heater matrix, rear wheel steer gaters and front to rear brake pipes!

We will be drawing straws on that one in the workshop! 8O :o

I'm sure Pete will supply the car fitted with the s62, along with manual box and a 24 month warranty for £1568.49. He will also offer discount if he gets to keep the old ZF box.

I took my CSi to bruntingthorpe to compare alongside an Alpina version and although, I was obviously slightly biased, I preferred the standard CSi!!! It had a much better sound to it and the performance difference wasn't felt at all - although the other guy didn't turn the traction control off and wasn't driving as 'keenly' as me!!!!!!!!!!
I gave mine a proper workout on that airfield!!!

Why would you draw straws at that ? Aren't 8 Series exciting cars to work on being so packed full of technology

M8 to me is the greatest BMW never made. Proper supercar looks. Supercar out of this world performance. All the rest of the 8 Series except maybe 850CSi to me seem like GT cars.

Should I be looking for an 8 Series I would be getting 850CSi or a T Reg low owner low mileage standard original 840Ci Sport BMW Individual

I seem to recall that everything on a CSI (or most 8 series) is massively labour intensive - and that's on a good day - and if you find someone who knows what they're doing!!!

Heavy offtopic

But a totally original B10 BT will smoke a CSI or B12 5.7 so badly

that the E31 will be ashamed,,, only topspeed is more in B12

I know that for sure,, because on the 2012 ALPINA meeting in Germany my friend had a sprint in his BT vs 2 B12 5.7 and Rainer Witt (the worlds biggest ALPINA collector)) who was driving his B12 said to my friend,,, okey okey it is not necessary any more to show us who have the quickest one ,, i was so pissed because i had left litlte earlier,, and had really wanted to sprint with them

How about from 70 to 150??? CSi has a decent amount of torque... It's not all just to get you off the line!!!
I upset some guy in a then new AMG SL Merc a few times when we 'met' on a certain stretch!!!

Also seemed to be identical performance to an Audi S2 from 60ish upwards!!!

Not that I would ever exceed 70 on British roads, of course!!!
