E39 Autobox Drama's

I'm about to pull my hair out with the car trouble I've been having this week.

Needless to say it's not over yet!

The auto box on my 530d has started to play up!

When cold the box seems to hold onto gears and the shift quality is poor until warm. Once everything is all warm the shifts seem o.k.

The past two nights the car has somehow got stuck in 5th gear/lockup and will not change down. This has thrown the auto warning light on the dash.

If I stop and switch the engine off then normal service resumes. This has happened two days in a row. I will be getting the codes read in the morning and will post up the results.

Has anyone had this before?

I had the gearbox serviced when I bought the car three years ago but I have done quite a few miles pulling a caravan and car trailer.

I have never been happy with the auto as I used to run a manual 530d before the touring. If the box is goosed I will have a go at converting to a stick.

I'm just skint this month after repairs and rubber to both cars.

I'm not going to scrap it. If the auto is not salvageable then I'm going to convert it to a stick shift.

I do wonder what the break at though?
