Hi folks,

A mates just bought a '76 520i which is really struggling on cold start up.

Until last year it had been parked up untouched since '89, in the last year it's still done no mileage just moved about a bit. In trying to get it running right the previous owner has replaced the injector pump with no luck. Also when cold, disconnecting the cold start valve makes no difference (is that good or bad?).

With no throttle it just stalls and floods but with a small amount of throttle it'll keep running but sounds like it's missing.

We do need to get it up to temp to see how it runs then as well but before we get chance to have another play has any one got any tips on what to try or be looking at first? Neither of us have much idea of how this injection system works.

Cheers
Dave

(yes i know this should probably be in the Other BMW tech section but that's a ghost town)

Check the notorious air slide valve - they often seize up:

Also measure the resistance of the blue temperature sensor:

Is it still on leaded petrol?
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Is it K jet ? These turds will have points ignition if I am not mistaken and that is the first thing that needs setting. Sort the points dwell using a meter, not a feeler blade ! and check and adjust the ignition timing to factory spec . Probably worth going through the tappets as well and obviously check for leaking vacuum and breather hoses. Then and only then start looking at the fuel system. A similar system was used on early Golfs, E21 323s , Mercs and lots of other 80s turds. The principal and the component layout is identical on all of them.
IIRC correctly they have a cold start regulator which controls fuelling all the time via bimettalic gubbins inside, they can go wrong and will cause a major rich issue like you have. They can be repaired.

By the way, this will NOT need an unleaded conversion. Just back off the timing a touch if it detonates.
All these heads have hardened seats. Much money was wasted doing unneccessary 'conversions' over the years on cars that did not need it ! :(

Awesome stuff, thanks Pete.

I've been told it's Kugelfischer rather than K-Jet, looks very much like K-Jet to me though. Apparently that same as what was fitted to the 2002Tii.

I'll have to have a read up about setting the points with a meter.

Good news on this not needing an unleaded conversion

Also check engine-to-body earth strap for good electrical conductivity, and ensure spark plugs of the correct type and gap are fitted.

Oh wow ! I have just checked back to look at pics of the proud turd and it is indeed Kugelfisher ! That's a very rare turd !

They are a whole new world of trickery but thankfully there are lots of 02 paedos around who I am sure will steer you right. Obviously the 02 Tii had the same injection system.

The advice about the tappets and points is still valid but there are several other important bits that need checking/ setting up for these turds to run properly.

So get on Google and If you cannot get answers there, you may have to join an 02 forum
