Driving along tonight about 75 and suddenly got a loud rumbling noise which at first I thought was the road surface.

It turns out when the revs go over 2500 there is a loud "rumbling" and some vibration. Also when pulling away there is a similar noise.

My first thought was the bottom end had gone, although the fact it idles OK without noise and cruises along OK i have dismissed this.

What does a "dual mass" flywheel sound like when it fails ? as this is my diagnosis at the moment. Whats the danger in continuing to drive it "carefully" if it is this ?

Any pointers appreciated !!

Alright Kev :)
wheel speed related? Rear driveshaft CV failure? dare I say it... Could it even be a loose / damaged wheel? 75mph seems to be where wheel issues resonate

Hi Kev  ,
when DMF's fail, its usually accompanied by a lack of being able to get a gear- If the car still selects all gears ok, then i'd rule it out

the rumble sounds like its more likely to be rear end of the drivetrain, as per Gareths suggestion.
