I must be missing something but why do some petrol heads get excited over Alpinas ? I mean pretty sure they are great cars but what is it about them ?

1. Pedigree. Do a bit of research on Alpina's history.
2. Exclusivity. Count the M3s on an average stretch of motorway, then try to find an Alpina.
3. Style. You get it or you don't! :D

I was aware of point 2 that they are very very exclusive .... Is it just aimed at having more kind of subtle refined gentlemen type performance ? Not too in ur face. Only those in the know know what Alpina is ?

Alpina = proper modified/engineering tuning company, they are that good they have been recognised as a manufacturer in their own right
Hartge = lash up bodge job artists in comparison :D

Proper Alpinas don't come from Sytners... :D

Alpina are unique in that BMW allow them to build their own cars on BMW platforms. So your Alpina comes from a BMW dealer with a BMW warranty. Most will be heavily tweaked beneath the skin, from engine and drivetrain modifications to brakes, suspension and interior changes. Some Alpinas fit the 'gentleman' performance bill - you'll see a lot of autoboxes in Alpinas - but they occasionally knock out an utter weapon like Simon's B10 Biturbo or the E36 B8 4.6 just to keep you guessing. They also have a stupidly confusing system for naming their models.

Not sure in the UK - Sytners might have an exclusive licence but if you walked into a dealer with a bag of money asking for one they'd hook you up one way or another.

I'm sure they would, but they're rare....

Alpinas are for Alpen-munchers living in the rarefied air of the Alps.
