e34 bonnet release handle reinstall

just got 525iX touring and first thing decided to replace speakers, to have an easy access I took off the hood release handle,just the plastic bit, just one screw, easy, now putting it back is impossible, it just does not want to go in place, is there any trick? I just can't figure it out. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Never had a problem when ive removed/refitted, maybe the cog has turned back too far?

thanks, finally sorted it, the cog was broken and spring stuck not letting handle fit properly
