I'am off to look at a 1998 e36 318ti sport Tomorrow with the intention of buying.
Its Avus Blue with Swade interior
Its cheap as it has no T and T however its immaculate and i have another compact at my expense should it need anything
What should i look out for with these ?
Rust wise i'am told its excellent, its done 140k with 3 owners from new
ive had a compact before but it was a 400 heap of shit as a means to get about.
I know the windows can be trouble, first thing i will be doing is greasing all them up after the agro we had with my mums.
are the m44 lumps still chain driven like the m42's
Also what do the sports consist of? Stiffer suspension i'am guessing ?
318ti Sport Buyers guide ?

Sports have M3 style bumpers, suspension, sports seats, black head lining, M steering wheel and gearknob, yes M44's are chain driven and not a bad lump.

Had a look at it, was clean enough.
Started straight away, the guy said its the first time in 8 month. sounded like it had no compression for the first few seconds of turning it over and miss fired for a min or so but after a few mins seemed to run well
Does that sound ok considering its been off the road since july 2011 assuming when it ran out of tax????
Looks like it needs a tyre or two as there cracked, needs an exhaust rubber thingy as its snapped, front winscreen is smashed, but have a spare sat on my drive are these easy to change ?
Interior is immaculate, its in some individual colour looks nice
Drivers window is about to pop out of its runner, might be able to save it before it gives up. these are an absolute night mare on compacts.
Its sub £300 and has perfect rear arches only bit of rust is a rotten front wing other than that its mint just very dusty

I have a 318ti sport (agean blue) and its a well good car,one of the best bmw`s i`ve had up to press.
I have found spares to be plentyful and cheap as well as using many common parts from
the salloons and coupe`s.
The engine is indeed the M44 (171k on mine and very strong) and its sounds as if yours has the sweade/blue interior which came with the car.
Do the usual stuff to it for a car that has been stood for a while and you should have a little angry beast here.
I get @28ish around town and touching @44 on a run still so its not too bad.And thats not hanging around either, it just loves to rev but is also fine at low revs like now in the snow.(Shame the big tyres mess it up in snow)
Good look mate and at that price????
Mart.

The screen is bonded so a glass guy will undoubtably want a fifty to swap it and you have to hope it does not break while he is removing it ! My guy charges £100 fitted new.
Have a thorough search for rust on the sills by the lifting pads. Cars with skirts are often quite grim when you start digging
Front wishbone bushes will be fooked and undoubtably the outer balljoints as well .
If it runs allright, the heater works, it has no sill rust and no ABS / traction light issues , bid him £200. even at £200 you will be amazed how quickly it will owe you £6/ 700 by the time you have fixed the issues and taxed and tested it.
£200 turds are very tempting but don't stay £200 for long

Thats what i'am thinking pete, Time i sort the windscreen out, one tyre looked a bit cracked, there was no traction control or abs lights so everything looks ok there. He tells me the last mot cost him £600 and had new brake pipes and control arms
I'am thinking a £400-£500 car with tax and test seems less of a gamble incase this needs all sorts for the mot.
Rust wise it was spot on, the arches etc, just a tiny bit on the front wing. under the sills looked ok, slight bits of surance rust but nothing too bad.
Ive got a 90k compact on the drive which my mum has had since new however it also needs £500 for mot and has never been serviced since 2005 ish. Also both front windows are fooked and the interior is beige and fag stained to death and its green i hate green cars

1. buys a new car with beige cloth?
2. smokes in a car ?
3. does not service a car for 8 years ?
