First off, this is an issue with my E46 but I'm not a member on any other BMW forum so I thought there might be a few guys on here that could help.
Mods, if there is a specific section for tech help on other E models then feel free to move the thread.
Right, tonight on my journey home my 330d decided to drop me a little Xmas surprise! Pulling from a junction, so on power but not hammering it, normal driving, there was a large bang. Straight after that it had no power at all. No boost from the turbo etc. I limped it home and had a look under the bonnet where I found that it had squirted a fair bit of oil out of the dipstick tube.
Any ideas folks? It's a 2000 reg 330d auto...
Cheers in advance

It sounds like your turbos gone.. Remove the inlet pipe of the turbo and check if there's excessive movement at the spindle shaft and see if you can spin the spindle

Possibly a boost pipe has burst or a connection has blown of, would be surprising for a turbo to fail in this manner with no warning.

Sounds like boost pipe split or popped off but have also seen an inlet manifold split open at the seem ,you would see oily mess around that side too but either should be quite apparent.

You say oil out of the dipstick tube? So the dipstick was forced out of the tube?
This would indicate excessive crank case pressure normally caused by a blocked oil separator of which there are a couple of types one of which can block if not changed regularly.
This can also cause turbo failure.
As mentioned, check that none of the boost hoses have come adrift first of all then check the condition of the turbo and the oil separator.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.
I had no tools at home tonight so couldn't strip anything to see for sure. I have come across a few things in my research tonight that crosses over with what a few of you have mentioned so those will be looked into.
Dipstick was still in the tube, when I first glanced at it earlier I presumed it was from there, but it could well have done the common mani split and blew oil over in the same location so could be that.
Like I say, it will be looked at and all these pointers give me a reference to look at first so it's much appreciated.
Frustrating as I've only had the car 2/3 weeks!

There is a oil breather which gets blocked up and can cause problems, I remember reading about it on e46 forum somewhere, i had the newer type on my 320d im sure the 330d is the same.
When you have fixed the car have a look into removing the swirl valves, Common problem on 320 330d pre 05, Engine eats them and dies and its a new engine job, New blanking plates will set you back £40ish

Righto, after taking things apart it appears the common fault if the inlet manifold splitting and exploding is what happened.
So I've sourced another manifold, all new gaskets and some of the swirl flap blanks whilst I'm at it.
Thanks again for the input, much appreciated.
