I know its not a E30 issue but please, I know there are some good mechanics on here that im hoping maybe able to help!
I have just bought a BMW X5 3.0d 52plate off of my friend.
He has been told the engine is knackered and he cant afford to have it fixed so ive bought it off him & hoping to get it sorted for a good price!
When he last drove it, he had to pull over as the engine rev'd really high & didnt stop when he turned ignition off & smoke came from bonnet.
It went into the garage & apparently the engine bores have filled with diesel.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could have caused this?
Im prepared to buy a refurb engine for this but would like to have some idea as what could have caused this so it doesnt happen again!

It will more than likley be failed components within the turbo, allowing the engine to run on its own lubricating oil, hence still running with the ignition off.

So a new turbo then, do you think a new engine will be needed?maggspower wrote:It will more than likley be failed components within the turbo, allowing the engine to run on its own lubricating oil, hence still running with the ignition off.

You could now drop in a v8 if you are ditching the diesel lump.

The diesel X5 returns 29mpg, which is much better plus once there remapped give an even better mpg return!

Removed the injectors, 4 of them are fucked! 1 of them a large part of it has broken off and gone into the bore (the bore that filled with diesel) and scored the bore
Whats my best option?
1) Buy 2nd hand engine & fit new injectors - I can get new injectors for £100 each through a friend & a 2nd hand engine will cost around £1k.
2) Remove head, have bores skimmed, fit new piston rings & new injectors? (Dont have a clue what this idea will cost!

This is a no brainer for me. A good used engine with waranty.
A grand will soon be swallowed up by having engine work done, gaskets, coolant, oil etc. but what happens then when you start it and find the bottom end is gone as well, because it had eaten all its own oil and was reving to 15 000rpm.
If you got the car for a good price, just get a known good motor for it.

Can anyone tell me the engine code of the engines that get put into a 52-plate 3.0D X5 ? or where I can find it?
(I dont mean my cars individual engine number)
Also are the 330D & 530D engine the same?

One of the engines are the same.i think the 530d is the same and the 330d is different
used to work in a scrapyard and sent a few engines out from x5 and 530d.sumps are different as the front diff bolts to it and there's a hole in it for a half shaft
but im almost sure the bare blocks are same
i can try get you one from the yard i worked at.they normally give me good deals

Same engine, different sumps BUT some models have swirl flaps and X5's dont.
Re-use your inlet manifold if its not f*cked.

You might not be quite so pleased by the time it is a running car

Brilliant, a recon engine centre - you definitely won't get ripped off to the tune of £3000 with them then. That £1800 won't include the £800 turbo that caused the original engine to destroy itself.andrew320i wrote:Just got a quote from a engine centre and they can collect my car fit a recon engine, 12 months / 20,000 miles warrenty included all for £1800
So, who is this reputable outfit?

Been looked into and it looks like it was the injectors that caused the damage not the turbo. 2 of the injectors bottoms have broken off into the engine allowing it to fill with diesel. National Engine Centre are who quoted me.

That'll be a secondhand engine then. The £1800 will quickly become £3000+ because they'll be fitting new everything.
That will all end very badly. It needs to go to a proper garage who can remove the head and see what's happened. Or even better, stick it on Ebay and flog it for a nice profit to someone who thinks they can fix it for £800.

The "stick it on Ebay" advice is the best you will get . Buying a complex horrid turd like a ten year old X5 is hardly a wise decision but buying one with a foooked engine when you clearly have no mechanical knowledge is financial suicide !Andyboy wrote:Oh dear.andrew320i wrote:National Engine Centre![]()

As you have hopefully paid sub £500 for said turd, get it on the bay pronto. State that it does not run and it may have an engine issue or just need a new fuse or three
There will be a feeding frenzy involving bruvs/easties and sportswear clad inked indigenous vermin that will see the sorry scrapper pull much more than its true value. This route will be your only chance of a profit .

Ive changed loads of engines before but never on a 4x4!
Im more than happy to attempt the engine change, I just keep reading about re-programming on injectors & changing this that and the other on the M57 engine to make it fit the X5. Thats why thought it might be cheaper going to a engine centre! My father-in-law used a engine centre on his works transit, cost £1300 supply and fit and theyve never had any trouble!
