A good mate of mine is interested in getting a Coupe , 2litre diesel, around 08/09 plate(?).
I know nothing about these, but he would be interested in any tips, what to look out for, servicing costs etc.......?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanx

1 series or 3 series?

Either way, make sure its got FBMWSH.

Servicing is condition based and a lot of new BMW's had service pack's which meant an initial charge when the car was new for 5 years servicing.

Overall they are pretty reliable, great on fuel, have decent performance for a 4 pot diesel and handle great.

Look out for a noisey timing chain which sound like a scraping/rattling noise at approx 1200-1800 rpm.

The teeth on the sprockets wear as do the guides which can lead to the chain jumping teeth or snapping.

It's a major job to sort which requires a full engine strip down and a new crank as the sprocket is part of it.

This problem effects all bmws with the N47 engine (4 cyl diesel) from 2007 to 2009 and a lot have been repaired under warranty or good will.
