Hi,

After finding a good quote for insurance and knowing someone selling an E34 525i sport, I'm wandering if anyone can give me a heads up of what to expect.

The car in question is a Avus blue 1995 525i Sport.
It's got 113,000 miles, white leather and the bodywork has got ZERO rust, he says its got mint bodywork.

Do you think they are reliable cars in general?
What sort of MPG can I typically expect, I know its thirsty, but are the thirstier than a 325i sport?

Any other info would be helpful.

Also, is £1,600 a decent asking price?

Cheers

£1600 is strong money for an E34 now as most are tired scrap.

A good one though ( Which this sounds like ) is still an excellent car.

Get it bought 8)

Is the very cheap 540i Auto E34 that's been tempting me a plain stupid idea or do I stand a chance of not ending up bankrupt?!

From your description it sounds like one I had my eye on last year, it went for about 1600 quid iirc, what wheels does it have on it?

While 1600 quid is strong for a 34, I'd rather plough 1600 quid into one of them than a doggy e39!

its a late one which is nice and if as clean as the seller suggets then I think worth every penny. And i think the 525 sport is the one to go for TBH.

What else can you buy as reliable, with as much class for 1600 sheets?

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

What awful wheels. That will be an epic tramlining fail.

You need to get those sill covers off to inspect for rot - many an E34 owner has been reduced to tears once they've been removed.

Those wheels look ace on the more recent 5 series but oh dear they do not suit an E34, and would look gash on a E39 as well.

The E34 is a very reliable car in general - one of BMW's finest engineered cars.

I owned a 1988 535iSE for a while, and it was a pretty stonking barge, still capable of a 147mph indicated top speed. 8O

Main thing to look for on them is worn front suspension, usually given away by steering wheel 'shimmy' at 55-60mph.

I gather the later M50B25 cars make the best choice in terms of performance and economy.

Be aware that large rims on an e34 can play havoc with the balljoints and other bushes.

that can be a not too fun job to replace:(

This is the original E-bay advert.

Can someone confirm is they are really comfort seats up front? I can't tell.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320869833734? ... 1423.l2649

It looks like a nice car, I've seen it in the flesh. It's regularly parked next to my 106, I see it pretty much everyday.

I can say, it's definitely driven like a dog though......ragged the fook out of :(

Council scum chariot then. The advert has all the tell tale signs. Crap pictures outside a garage lock up, council wheels, ghetto seat position, suspect ebay user name, poor grammar and most of all its in Slough.

innit, a festering turd with bling rimz to distract any potential buyer away from the hanging sills !
surely any Decent E34 can only start to go up in value and maybe a good investment ?

I love them they are great to drive,
they have to be now at the end of a decline where the very few good one's left will start to become desirable ?

I would rather own a nice E34 over an E39 thats for sure :D

E34s are great cars. I want another one! I look at ones for sale every now and then but haven't seen any for a while that look good enough to think about buying. Always such small amounts for sale :(

I would imagine that next to a manual 540i the 525i is the one to go for, and certainly a more "sensible" choice.
basically, if you want one and you find a good one, buy it!

He's mine from a few years ago:

Apart from the fan clutch going when I first bought it, it was ultra reliable for the 2.5 years that I owned it. Sold it for around a £1k about 5 years ago - wish I'd kept it really. Gave good mpg at the time but felt a bit under powered.

i have had a e34 525i sport for 3 years now, although its taking a back seat due to me getting an e38 740i its been used at oulton for drifting and used every day for work etc been a great car! bushes are a pain but mines been polly bushed througout so ride is a bit bumpy esp as it has eibach supersport and bilstien b8's on it, its done 230k and does not miss a beat sounds great and i would not be with out it! great fun in the wet and sticks very well in dry! (due to cheap tyres!) ill see if i can get some pics, its a rare colour sterling silver ive not seen many e34's that colour.

I owned an E34 525i sport in diamond schwartz, was in good nick generally had done 200k, I redlined it everyday and almost everywhere, never ever let me down, was v quick once moving, especially past a ton. Once did a drive gloucester - coventry and back spot on 70 the whole way and back, managed 38mpg, calculated by me not computer. Mine was a manual too, probably the best changing gearbox ill ever have :-)

My daily driver is a 525i sport manual. Very nice to drive once the worn out control arms were replaced and the body is good rust wise now with the all important rust prevention wax in crucial areas of the body. Rather then spend money on mods I've just sorted bits that needed replacing and general maintenance. Just a few minor items to address like waxoyling brake pipes. Its an old car now and you need to carry out extra preventive maintenance.

I hardly thrash the car and it spends most of the time cruising along in 5th gear.
