Does anyone no what gear oil to use in the compact, M43B19TU engine 1999 V reg, some places say it's ATF some say it's some BMW special stuff and I can't see anything on the gearbox it's self.

Depends what sticker it has on it. I had a 328i in a while ago that had the LT (lifetime) oil in it, if it has this I found the best stuff to replace it with is Redline MTF fully synthetic

Cheers. I'll have to get it up on the ramp at work and have a better look.

I've got a box from a 1999V Compact in mine. It has fresh ATF Dexron 11, and it's pretty rattly on idle when hot. I might have to drain it and put something else in.

I was thinking more in terms of some EP80! I'll stick some in - it's cheap enough and it shouldn't be too baulky now the weather is warming up. I just looked at TIS and they recommend it for summer use.

This is just maintenance, no rattles at present, second gear is a bit whiney and It's a bit heavy when cold, to be expected from a 170k gearbox that's not had the easiest of lives.
