325tds bad fuel consumption

hi ive got a 1997 325tds had it for about 12 months now but never bothered working out the mpg, i always thought it was bad but just never worked it out. i recently noticed the diesel pump was leaking not sure how long its been leaking for though, have since fixed the leak and have made a point of working out the mpg and it works out about 24mpg, now that is all around town but surely it should be better than that, the misses drives it mostly so it doesnt get driven hard (or so she says) any ideas on why its so bad or how it could be solved. has had oil and filter changes within the last 1000 miles also blanked egr valve and a little boost increase.

How many miles are you getting out of a tankful? I also run a 325tds touring and around town it is thirsty!

They aren't economical cars!!

Was getting about 300ish to a tank but that was when the pump was leaking. The last one I had would do about 35mpg with mostly round town driving.
