If the mafs are playing up then 10mpg driving like a dead man. If they are ok then 18mpg around town driving like a dead man.

fookin love e31's mate top cars. granite silver on some throwing stars
i have also been looking at them but always in the back of my mind its a no as i wouldnt be able to afford the upkeep if something goes wrong as its mainly a dealer jobby to get parts as there wasnt much aftermarket products made for them.good luck if you do buy one they really are sweet.
my school folder was of a red 850 i picked up from a motorshow, would they even fit in a garage?

Rust is another. There is a 850 at the top of my street. The old boy that has it bought it new. Looked great until about a year ago and the rot is definetly setting in.
Wings, doors, arches and even the nice deep dish 5 spokes he has on are all fooked with the brown stuff.
Its a shame as it sounds amazing and is mint inside. But lack of use and lack of cleaning seems to be taking its toll. Had asked him about two years for first refusal if ever decided to sell but now I think it will be making its way to china to become a toaster.

Rule no 12 of buying turds = DO NOT buy a car that has spent any length of time in Scotland .
I've seen Scottish turds with rusty glass !

Pete I agree. My cabby is pretty good rust wise with only a little at the bottom of the drivers side wing on the cill. But it lived most of its life in dorset and in a nice heated garage 6 months of the year.
But I saw some absolutly rotten turds when viewing cars before I bought mine.
Again mine now lives in the garage and only gets out on dry days and when it's occasionally not broken

Just wait till you need any suspension parts, or an air con condensor or a light unit , or any exhaust components, or any electrical parts etc etc. With the exception of the engine and box , nearly all the parts are 8 series specific with a price to match !
Euros stock F all and there are none in breakers
If by any chance anybody knows where a fragger is ? I need a drivers door window switch cluster and the loom plug, amongst other things.

ac fan is e34,ac rad is 95 quid from autocool, suspension parts?main shocks come to around 400ish rubber parts you can powerflex or oem.agree about the light units though.exhausts are 900 incl cats in stainless so they aint too bad.there like anything if it don,t need work to start with look after it and you shouldn,t catch cold. it,s the aftermarket big wheels which f**k up the suspension parts,so original is safest

I had the pleasure of owning an 840i for almost a week, i was extremely happy that nothing fell off before it was sold to a very nice man
although i find them fantastic to drive the wiring/suspension and other crap involved with these turds is immense
a chap I know re-shelled one back when they were about a year old in 1996 he still hasn't got over the trauma !!

The problem is the newest one is 12 years old so they all need
work
PS If you have part number for the A/C condenser , please post it. £300+ is not funny.

These are great cars, but complete money pits. I had one, a 1997 P reg 840Ci, around 8 years ago from a BMW dealer with the warranty. I wanted the proper one (850CSi) but couldn't find one for the right money from a BMW dealer.
It sucked up something like 3 grand in 2 months - AC fan and condenser, front shocks (1 was creaky and they have to replace both), seat back release cable, two batteries etc. It was a 1 owner 60'000 mile car with FBMWSH for all the good that did it. I wouldn't want to own one now, big wobbly old turds that a 330Ci will deal with quite easily.

I love them, there was an 840 on lpg for sale on ebay a few days ago, looked fine apart from the exhaust tips were protruding too far.
The biggest nightmare I've heard of is synchronising the two motors that drive each rear window!!

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Autocool are pretty good - there's an aircon specialist neaby (maybe even next door?) who fit them as well. The Autocool condensers are absolutely identical to the BMW/Behr ones, even down to the spot welds.
8 Series front legs can be converted to take E34/E32 inserts as well.
