Due to the prats i have my car insured with and being accused of being a motor trader and wont let me change car over anymore, i dont have much option but to keep my 316i compact till i get my 4th year no claims. so i need to sort the compact out

Anyway got a few niggles with the compact.

1. The rear wiper doesnt work when i first start car, it buzzes for about 10 seconds and goes off :S

2. When cold every now and again it can have a miss fire, that lasts about 10 seconds at around 3/4 throttle.

3. Steering feels very wooley, nothing like my e30, feels very stiff and as if it has resistance? is this just because its worn out to fook.

4. how do you remove an airbag steering wheel so it doesnt go bang when you remove it.

1 pass

2 checked the sparkplugs, leads, also splits in the air intake pipe and surrounding hoses?

3 e36 steering doesn't have as much feel as e30, but it shouldn't be that bad, id check the rubber coupling in the column ( similar to on e30s ) and I possible lift the front of the car so both wheels are off te ground, undo the nuts holding the strut tops to the shell so the struts drop down and out can see whether the top mounts are free spinning. They do get water and dirt in eventually and start to bind, you should be able to get enough room to do the above without having to take the whole strut out.

4 make sure the ignition is off, undo the two torx screws from the back of the wheel holding the airbag in, pull it forward, unplug it. You can take the battery out and leave it for an hour or so if you want to be extra sure, but there shouldn't be any power in the airbag circuits as long as the ignition is off.
cheers,

harry

Bang on home boy, the only bits I would fix are things that take very very little time and don't cost a bean, you all ready have what £500-£600 quid tied up in the rust bucket no need make it any more.

ANd its cost me £440 Not a penny more so dont know where you get that figure from, ive done 3000 miles in it and all ive done is put fuel in it, sounds like i was majourly ripped off there

ps: Still waiting for these links of £200-£300 t & t bmw compacts that are immaculate

i have an e36 318is and the steering is a lot heavier compared to the e30 especially when turning around, but i do prefer the e36 when the speed picks up

One thing i would check is the air box, mine was running lumpy so i had a look at the intake system

I found half an oak tree in there which was a bit worrying but this wasn't the worst part, on the filtered side of the air filter box is a foam lining this had started to perish and suck up into the engine and icv which was causing my idle to drop randomly

I removed the foam as its only sound deadening, i would highly recommend taking the foam out as it was stuck all over the inlet manifold , throttle body and jamming my icv

I said homeboy to get a reaction homie, looks like it worked winkeye

I also like things to work on my car but when I have a temporary shitter if just ride it out don’t spend a bean on it especially if the reality is I will most likely sell it at a loss when I come to get rid.

As for the price of compacts I already told you I sold mine for scrap value with no tax or MOT to a mate of mine who was painting my E36 Touring. He then painted it up to the point it was near mint also colour coded the bumpers mirrors etc gave the engine a service so it ran like a champ wacked a 12 month MOT on it and sold it on for £450. also had very low miles and quite good service history.

In regards to your question about it running lumpy the above compact also did that turned out it was splits in the rubber intake boot which were not visible when inspecting the boot while still on the car, only became apparent when it was removed.

So he bought your shitter for scrap value (which is £250), did a load of work on it and sold it for £450. He sounds like a clever chap.

Well i sold it him for £150 plus he painted my front bumper on the touring FOC.

He's a painter by trade so gets paint cheap and does stuff outside of work in his garage, didnt have to pay to advertise it either as someone from his work had it off him. still made about £200 for about 2 days work

IIRC he painted the bonnet bumpers and mirrors not much work, and all he did to the engine was give it a service.

Alex and Andy, your best off ignoring this bruv. He's a proper massive c0ck. He's famous right across the forum for it.

He constantly makes himself look like a plonker. Then sends gay pm's if it's pointed out. Sad really
