Hi

I have a E46 323Ci Coupe.

I had the front wishbone bushes replaced not long ago at my request as well as a BMW Inspection I Service at a BMW Dealer. I wanted those parts/components replaced because on the motorway i could feel a vibration in the footwell through my feet above 80mph. I can only really feel it at those speeds.

However, this is some weeks ago now and i have not been on the motorway since having had the bushes replaced.

Today i went to Silverstone so used the motorway and noticed on the M40 that:
70 - 80mph slight vibration build up through the front
80 - 100mph vibration gets much worse unfortunately
I think above 100mph it levels out though not really completely sure on that.

There is also a slight whistling sound around about 80mph. However, i noticed this a few years ago in 2008/2009 before the engine blew up.

Help!!!!

Sounds like a bucklied wheel, Ilford pothole action ? :)

I think it affects the stability for sure. Maybe a geometry check is in order and wheel balancing?

Some of the roads near Turnham Green station are bad as in the subtle bumps. Enough to start to unsettle a car at unsociable speeds in my opinion.

I only got the bushes replaced because i told the Dealer this was happening. The technician looked into it and said it was the bushes which is apparently a common E46 replacement.

I am sure you must have seen this before.

Any other ideas what is could be?

PS the E30 i looked at it today to put in a litre of oil. And those cables near the top of the cam cover. i think there is some of that shroud is burnt/missing or not there. As there is just a blue/brown wires with nothing around them. And the car currently hunting alot for first 5-10 minutes upon cold start. There is also a bit of unburnt petrol vapour in the exhaust and it gets in my eyes.

At those speeds it will be a buckled wheel.

E46 wishbone bushes are very common for wear and tend to last between 30-50k (genuine BMW) depending on wheel size and how the car is driven.

When the wear they will give a sloppy vague steering feel and when they are really f*cked they will knock over bumps and pot holes.

Worth checking the driveshafts? A mate of mine experienced a similar problem on his car although not a BMW.

The prop shaft coupling is apparently starting to wear as it was an advisory from the BMW Inspection I Service. I didnt bother getting it replaced.

It was last changed in April-June 2008 circa 100 000 miles so about 28000 miles ago. I am sure this is too short life expectancy?

I have had the rear axle carrier replaced free of charge in 2007. This is common with E46 3 Series Coupe. [At the time i read in BMW Car it tended to affect 323/328. However, as we now know if affects M3s too. I think there was a component improvement in 2000 with 330 but i am not sure?]

As when accelerating there used to be a vibration you can feel something of somekind (difficult to describe for me) underneath the car. Also when cornering tight corners/fast there used to be a bloody noise from the rear. This only happened after i took it on one of these driving type course at Bruntingthorpe.
