I have less problem with BMW ditching the 6, which is a shame (every BMW Ive owned has been a 6) but its a society or market requirement as the article suggests, than with their plan to abandon RWD which is a cost cutting exercise at the expense of the driving enthusiast. Thats not on.

Ferrari - they still produce high-rev NA engines?
Porsche - they still produce NA flat-sixes? Though i read they might (re?)introduce the flat-four soon?

aside the m division, BMW are catering for the mass production market where as porsche & ferrari can just charge whatever they like to cover their manufacturing costs.

As far as I've witnessed BMW are simply theeee best at engineering a solution to a manufacturing hurdle, and handle all aspects of production engineering with brilliance

cost, manufacturing simplicity, functionality, and almost as important as all of these, aiming that product at the market. So far BMW haven't really put a foot wrong - well there was that dodgy 7 and bangle was in the firing line, but.

The world is changing, and they have to change accordingly or they will fall by the wayside in terms of unit sales and market share - ok there are people who want dirty great 6's, but how many 118's are there on the road

I heard of this a few months ago at the bmw training centre and i was very dissapointed as i love the BMW 6 pot!

But as mentioned above, their aim is to increase sales, keep customers happy and make all the cars 'green'

The one car i cannot wait to have a little city car is Gordon Murray's T25 if it is cheap that is. Designed by one of the world's greatest engineer's alive (Gordon Murray/Adrian Newey are two of the world's greatest engineers in my opinion), it should be really good to drive, really fun, really economical, innovative technology and lots of very interesting ideas and great packaging and the kudos of being designed by Gordon Murray.

Yeah it is a proper shame BMW no longer make the NA Straight-sixes. Is it me or do all M20s sound louder than anything in the E36/E46/E92 3 Series NA Straight-sixes?
