Currently driving a pov spec 1996 E36 316 compact which costs me just over £500 per year to insure fully comp.
Soon to upgrading to a 1998 E36 323i sport touring and my insurance has come down for a bigger more powerful car that’s worth more!!
I’m not complaining just find it a little odd, do you think its because the touring is seen as a more sensible car?

not sure, but any insurance quote i get i always value the car at around 2500, that seems to be optimum level for insurance premium,
surprisingly it is also best to park your car on a private driveway rather than in the garage,

Really i can see your point about the value because in the eyes of the insurance company if your drving a £500 shit box your not gonna be too bothered about it.asmith88 wrote:not sure, but any insurance quote i get i always value the car at around 2500, that seems to be optimum level for insurance premium,

But the garage thing?? i have a double garage and although i dont put my car in there very often i always says its kept in a locked garage.
Prehaps this is becuase your cars more at risk of going up in flames in a garage??

not sure, but go on the comparisn websites and click driveway rather than garage and you will be surprised, only a little mind you but it is the cheaper option,
anything less than or more than 2500 and the price will usually rise.

what if your car isnt worth 2500 and you have to make a claim, would the insurance company in-validate your policy if they think the value of the vehicle inst correct5??asmith88 wrote:not sure, but go on the comparisn websites and click driveway rather than garage and you will be surprised, only a little mind you but it is the cheaper option,

I found that there's not that much difference between driveway and garage parking, I was quoted with a difference of about £30.

If you Got "Haters",Then your doing something Right!

A garage means:
1 : A place to store your crap thats not good enough for your house and 90% of garages can't fit it all in and the motor.. So they know you're lying!
2 : If it genuinly is in the garage, it makes it more desirable to thieving toerags because they want to know whats so special about the car in the garage instead of the turd on the drive
3 : If theres a housefire your car is more than likely going to go too
My insurance went up when I told them I was now a parent. I said surely it will mean i'm safer driving my family around. They said no it goes up because the child is a distraction in the car. Its just taking the raz out of all of us really. Theres no way of getting a good insurance deal. You could live in Buckingham palace, have 25 cameras on your car, 6 security guards stood around it in a safehouse thats as strong as a bomb bunker and drive a perodua 800cc nail doing 1000 miles a year social only with a voluntary excess of £750 and still get a quote for £1200. Insurance shouldn't be like this - it should have set prices...its fair then!

Unless it's an agreed value policy they will only ever pay Market value if something happens to the car, although I expect if you vastly under value the car they'd probably use your value as a basis for an offer.defjammin wrote:what if your car isnt worth 2500 and you have to make a claim, would the insurance company in-validate your policy if they think the value of the vehicle inst correct5??asmith88 wrote:not sure, but go on the comparisn websites and click driveway rather than garage and you will be surprised, only a little mind you but it is the cheaper option,

as above, i dont think they take it into consideration unless its an "agreed value", but if you value it lower than they do, they probably will then,
no rav there isnt that much difference but 30 quid is 30 quid i now have.

They will also look at claim ratio's for the car you are driving.
Its possible the average number of claims/ value of claim for your old car was higher, pushing the price up.
Just swapped my 98 astra 1.6 16v to an 86 325i total increase of......£18 per year. I cant complain.

Insurance is stupid! Paid under £800 for a modified R5GTT at 17 when a 1.2 Clio was way over a grand. When I asked why, they told me it's probably because not many 17 year olds have insured and crashed an R5

When I was 18 I swapped from my 1998 1.4 5 door 306
... to a 92 1.8 fiesta xr2i and saved £400 on my insurance... despite it being group 15 (IIRC)... I was also insured on any other car so was driving around my mum e46 cab perfectly legitly
The only thing it didn't cover me was for cars over £60,000 and 4x4's!

I do remember when i went from a Clio Williams to a E36 323 Coupe and it went down but you can kinda understand that little boy racer hatch to a fairly sensible car

yep, a 320 is also cheaper to insure than a 316!
And driveway makes it cheaper to insure than a garage (probably because its honest) how are you supposed to keep all of your 4 cars in a single garage?
And i valued mine at 3400 with admiral, best value to get the price down!
