My dad was telling me about a car he had in a few months ago (he's a mechanic), it was an e36 328, he can't remember the year but pretty sure it was a very early one. It drove fine upto about 50mph but as soon as it got to that speed the engine would die and the car would slow down, and then pick back up until the speed got upto 50 again, where the same thing would happen. As he doesn't have all the testing gear he recommended another garage, who put it on the diagnostic machine but didn't register any faults.

He hasn't heard anymore about the car but we were both curious as to what it could be? I guessed that the car might have traction control, and that the system uses the ABS sensors to detect wheelspin, and so braked the spinning wheel slightly, and one of the sensors had packed up leading to the cutting out. Anyone got any ideas what it could have been?

Like a speed limiter so to speak? Ie no matter what gear your in as soon as you hit 50 it dies?

Yes that was it Lee, it wouldn't go above 50mph without cutting out.

Lol! Done a bit of searching around and it sounds like a faulty DSC unit from posts on other forums I have read, nothing conclusive but sounds like the most likely problem.
