I've just had my wives car towed home, by the AA, with an overheating problem.
Basically the car was badly overheating. i.e. the temperature gauge needle was well into the red the AA guy found that the radiator was stone cold.
Although the rest of the water pipes and the engine was extremely hot.
He decided to take the thermostat out of it's black plastic housing. It seemed to be OK idling parked at the side of the road, but when it was driven up the road for about 5-10 mins it boiled up again. Could it be the water pump??? If not have you got any ideas of what it could be???
E46 M43 overheating problem y2k.

It could well be the water pump. Head gaskets are very unlikely on these - they're a very strong engine and none of that alloy block nonsense either.
