Thinking of going to LeMans next year. Will travel by car with my two sons over a long weekend Thu - Mon.
Will use Portsmouth to Caen ( Ouisterham) ferry.
Can anyone who has done this before give me some details on good quality camping sites, timings, things to do, and see, etc. and what the procedure is for booking the camping, etc.
Cheers
Any other information would be most welcome

I'm tempted to take the bike over next year, instead of the car.

Lots of usefull info on this site : http://www.beermountain.com/
Need to get registered with one of the ticket companies ASAP if you want the best site.
http://www.justticketsandmotoring.co.uk/ is my preferred choice as I have used them many times in the past.
Good campsites in my opinion are Houx, Houx-Annexe or Maison Blanch. All within easy reach of the main action.
A lot of companies will try to sell you a complete package which works out expensive. All you need is a camping ticket for car and tent and any adult "general enclosure" tickets. Any students or children under 16 should get their "general enclosure" tickets on arrival as they are approx half price.
Also this year is Le Mans Classic which may be an easier 1st Le Mans if the children are young ?

Thanks 12345Kevin. You have certainly pointed me in the right direction Spoke to Paul at 'Just Tickets & Motoring' He was really helpful, have now registered with him and he is booking everything for me. Really good service. Thanks again.

I went this year, there's loads of ways to do it with camping and travel.
My mate booked the camp site few months in advance, as well as ferry tickets. We got there late and god a bad pitch on the site that was miles away from the entrance, but least we was away from the dusty track which covered all the campers in that area with dust as it was frequently driven on.
But we arrived down there on the thursday and set up camp, we spent shopping and getting rest of supplies for the weekend. Friday we purchased the tickets for the track had a look around the shops and that, did the pitwalk and watched the cars practising around the track later in the day.
Mad friday was about as usual and if you're driving you can be expecting to be stopped on the road by a massive crowd and cheered on to do a burnout
Get there damn early on the race day if you want a decent spot for the start of the race, same as for sunday for the finishing line... to get to pit walk and get some freebies
Depending on the site if it's fenced or now, all security leaves sunday night usually so the french pikies start to come in and scavenge anything they can so keep your stuff together.. a bunch of scousers left their pitch sunday night for an hour to go to shops and we had to chase the pikies off from nicking their stuff.. which was all their tents and chairs all set up still
