the petrol guage has packed up on my 46 coupe,

it turns out it's the clocks that are facked and not the sender unit the guage is soldered into the speedo unit so i figured changing the clocks for a second hand unit is the best bet . are they coded to the car or will any E46 clocks work ?

Yes and because they are coded to car some other features may misbehave, probably someone out there that can do it though.

Can the clocks be taken apart and just swap the fuel gauges over?

can you not just solder in a replacement gauge then? not difficult and certainly worth a go if the clocks are goosed anyway.
