I rebuilt one of these engines which was in an E46 Alpina B3S due to big end bearing failure after the previous owner ran the engine low on oil.
Its basically a worked M52 head with cams on a US spec E36 M36 iron block with custom pistons, rods and crank and a unique inlet mainfold.
They like the odd head gasket and drink a bit of oil. The gasket alone was £300!

Yes, I remember you had one that needed a rebuild, so it was an owner problem rather than an inherant(?) problem. So no VANOS problems etc?
I have always liked them

Yes it was a stupid prev owner.
They have the same Vanos on the inlet cam that an M50tu and M52 have which is very reliable but the seals can wear with age but is easily sorted.

They seem to have a headgasket drama at around 100,000 or alot have failed. Theres one guy with a high miler 180k plus whos had the gasket go twice.
