Mmm tasty. I never used to like these old girls - a bit slab sided. They are growing on me and are stupidly cheap and quite plentiful here. Not seen a manual though.
How do the electrics hold up on these?

not bad, the a/c does fail though over time. They were spec'd up well though so you could get a gem.

That looks very nice. Chestnut red, and being a 9/80 registered car it's probably an original pre Motronic engine as well - they used to go like f*ck. That would give a 325i a proper nosebleed.

If it's as nice as it looks, that's worth the asking price.

No M version of the E23. Even the SA spec 745i with the M88 was never designated "M".

The advertised one is a lovely car. I haven't seen it, but I have spoken to the owner - just after he bought it.

They did facelift the E23. Somewhere between '82X and '84B.

Slight differences around the rear bumper, the A post gutter trim, some interior differences - not much, just slightly more modern - but different. The facelift lost all the interior chrome. Auto boxes were 4hp22 rather than 3. I prefer the earlier one - it looks and feels more "classy". In the same way that an E12 based six is a much more up market interior than the later e28 one.

9TKO above is a facelift as is the black one pictured above.

I'd expect any 735i manual would have an LSD. That was certainly the case with contemporary 535 and 635 models.

With Simon on this,the original XJ6 was a competitor to E23,and very much better looking.

Thing is though, an E23 stands a chance of completing a long trip! I prefer the Series 2 XJ by a long shot though - I saw a mint Greensand Daimler DoubleSix Coupe at a car show last week. A stunning car that I would own just to sit in it/look at it. Kent alloys, black vinyl roof, the whole 9 yards
Regular E23's made interesting bangers, but a serious money example has to be special, such as a 735i manual or a 745i. Otherwise it's a big old shed. E32's will reach classic status before these (@ 2056)

An E23 is far better built, out of far better components and far better engineered.

I had an '76P XJ4.2C for a wee while in the late 80s. Lovely car. Unfortunately by the mid 70s it was a BL car and build quality was inconsistent to say the least. This one was an S plate, so was one of the last. I had a few seventies Jags back in the day including a 3.4 saloon and a couple of V12 XJ-s's. One had been Ziebarted and was absolutely straight and rot free, the other hadn't and required a tart up job when it was 6 years old and a full body rebuild when it was 11 - wings, sills, arches, the usual.
BMW's were better made, but time is a great leveller and they're all rusty scrap now. The XJ is a more worthy rebuild cause because a good one is such a special car and the E23 is a tad characterless - unless it's a manual 735i of course.

they're just full of sh!t, and bullsh!t sells. The studio shots can hide a number of sins and make the turds look better than they are

They buy extremely clean cars then detail the hell out of them and have the pics done by professional photographers. I don't think there's any doubt that they only carry top quality stock.

A large amount of their "stock" is on a commission sale basis - at 20% + VAT PLUS a further £400 for the detailing and a further dditional fee for the photography.

They have had some spectacular results - a White 635 CSi Highline at over £20000 springs to mind.

that e23 is just as good in the metal as those pics show (if not better), it was not far from me and is stunning, but £9k? Maybe someone will buy cars at these prices.
