Called Fairbairn's as usual yesterday. Asked to be put through to the parts department as usual. Put me through as usual.
Called today,
"Parts Department please"
"You'll have to call on their direct line sir."
"OK. But you always just put me through."
"It's all changed, sir, I can't put you through. Shall I give you the direct dial number?"
"Go on then."
"0844......"
"Can't you just give me the '0141' version?"
"No sir, you can only use the "0844" number now."
"That'll be right. And pay Fairbairn's for the privilege of ordering parts from them? I don't think so. Can you ask [name] in BMW parts to call me please on ......"
"Of course sir. No problem."
25% of the cost of your 0844 call goes to the number holder.
Is it BMW UK or just some groups or just individual dealers?[/list]

My local dealer has a single number for everything.
There is always a "local" number behind the 0844 number - you could always say that you're calling from overseas - i think you can't call 0844 from overseas so they have to give you the normal number with standard area code.
I thought 0844 was no more than 5p a minute anyway and with most BT and Talktalk packages its included in your free minutes anyway ? - its 0845 and 0870 thats expensive.

The "local" number behind is the one I've been calling for years, the one I called today and yesterday.
The cost structure for 0844 numbers is very complicated and depends on, I think, the first two numbers after the 0844. Don't assume it's only 5p per minute. Some may be. Some are much more. Just because one is, don't assume all are. They are not all the same rate like 0845 and 0870.
Whatever, it's too much because the subscriber gets 25%.
