As I would like somthing fun again but cannot really afford a good e30 318is, compacts are getting very cheap and have e30 rear set up, so do they handle the same? I would be looking for A 318ti sport, is there anything to watch out for with these? And did any come with an LSD from factory? If not do e30 ones fit?
Thanks.
Do e36 compacts handle like e30's do?

Better. E30 rear end and much quicker geared steering. LSD's pretty much don't exist on Compacts, but the 318Ti Sport does drive nicely.

Having just got a compact I would say e30's handle better but to be fair I am comparing a pov spec 316 compact to my e30 which has fully sorted suspension and some nice toyo's
Steering is alot quicker on the compact
Steering is alot quicker on the compact

They feel very similar, you trade a bit of steering feel for a much quicker rack, and the main masses are more central in the car ( engine further back, smaller rear overhang ) so they can be a bit more snappy when pushed. You can also feel the solid, stiff modern shell too. With a few tweaks they can be made to handle superbly.
cheers,
harry

Imo compacts handle very well but not quite as much 'fun' as an E30.
Decent springs shocks and rubber sorts them out.
