Cold start problems

I have a 325tds e36 tourer that started fine, but it has been stood for a while now doesn't want to start from cold. I will be changing the glow plugs but also need to know how to check the lift pump operation or where the glow plug relay is and how to check its functionality.

Anyone got one had one or can point me in the right direction?
