Saw two today in EK and remembered I fancied a 728i sport. I don't think the 735i sport exists as a BMW model though.

Whatever happened to the convertible thing you found?

Go for a post '99 facelift and buy cheaply enough that you can afford to weigh it in if it shits itself. Or do as a pal of mine does - he buys it, runs it till it breaks then frags it. He reckons E38s break better than any other.

I considered one of these a couple of years back but most were complete moneypits (God knows what an E65 will be like at this age!) with knackered suspension, wrecked alloys, asthmatic air-conditioning, electrical gremlins and flaky dash pixels...they do look nice though, especially in Sport trim.

The 728i has a petrol tank specific to that model which is big £ to replace when it inevitably leaks. :(

Ihe had big BMW's and Mercedes in the past including SL's and a few S Classes and have genuinely came to the conclusion that people who can aford them initially when new are the ones able to fix them when they go wrong as parts can be horrfic, model specific and complex meaning the price of repair shoots up, i think the old adage of cheap now for a reason stands well. Hence why ive came back to my true love and can afford the upkeep of an E30 and love its relative simpleness....however mate i do fully know about itches to scratch....and youve gotta do it for at least a wee while!! :-)

There were Sport versions of all post 1998 facelift standard wheelbase cars in the UK. I've seen W plate 728i's (standard cars on 16 inch wheels) sell for well under 1500 quid as no bugger wants them now. They do apparently break very well, and I'd go for a 728i as they go well enough, are good on fuel on a run and the engine has a value. winkeye

How about buying a 94/95 £1k 740i with a long ticket.
Any big failure just sell it spares repairs and get another, you wont lose much
A good polish and it will still look terrific, esp calypso red with chrome
and it will be as fast as a 2.5 boxster, and from my experience, as economical as a E30 325i
