Went to look at an E36 compact tonight for a friend.

Symtoms are: looses the water, electric fan doesn't come on (No viscous fitted?) Pipes "seem" to become hard.

I know the plastic part that goes between the head and the top hose fail, so had already mentioned that to her. Let it warm up and saw a drip from that area.

Part 7 here:

Image

Litterally touched the top hose and WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Boiling water EVERYWHERE! And it was PROPPER boiling inside the head. This was after fast idle for 5 mins after starting from cold.

The end of the plastic bit was broken off in the end of the top hose, dispite a garage apparently having fixed it not long ago.

Had the head gasket done about 6 months ago. Don't know if the head was skimmed, but suspect not knowing the fools that did it.

Top hose gets hot, bottom hose stone cold.

No water in the oil

Has 180k miles on it.

I'm thinking:

a)if she is VERY lucky its just the above part (7) that was loosing water

b)Thermostat is stuck shut

c)Radiator is blocked (unlikely)

d)Head gasket is gone and the pressure caused part 7 to break due to the pressure

or

e)Part 7 has failed through age and now the head gasket has gone due to driving with little/ no water

Do M43 engines suffer from head gaskets?

Thoughts please :)

What would you do next (Other than fit an M52! :D)

Many thanx

Andy

How's the water pump? M43s do suffer from HG issues, but they're about as easy as a HG can be... & at least it's not snowing now unlike when mine went!

Why no viscous? Has it still got the rad shroud in place?

It might have aircon - a/c equipped 316i and 318i's have a leccy fan and not a viscous.

Most M43's are ripe for a head gasket now.

M43s love a head gasket - they typically go at around 100K. As Ziggy said though they're a simple fix on these. The M43 is a lovely thing to work on.

Nope, that is the M44.

M43 is the 8v 1.6, 1.8 & 1.9 found in the E34 518i, E36 316i and 318i and early (pre 2001 iirc) E46 318i.
