expecting a car with an engine I have never had many issues with in the morning,
it's a 518i it has an M43 1.8 engine that has stopped running, the garage it was at has backheeled it, the owner is a freind so I said i will take a look,
the other garage seem to think the timing has slipped but i believe they are chain driven ? I was led to believe they are fairly bulletproof .
does anyone know of any issues with the timing chains on the M43 ?
M43's are they problematic ?

Yep, they're chain driven. Fantastic little things and very reliable. Cheap to fix if anything does go wrong.
Weaknesses? Head Gasket nearly always goes at 100K. Ask any BMW mechanic (when these were newer a mate of mine reckoned he done 7-8 a week!). Some suffer from crank end float - normally higher mileage examples that haven't had the maintenance they need. Sticking throttles are common due to wear in the throttle body.
My old M43 engined 316i wouldn't start once. This was quickly cured by just a set of new plugs.
