Hi, I know this isn't e30 related but I'm may get some rims for it, I think the et is 40, but the new rims are et 20&22 (e39 alloys 19" 8.5&9.5j) so if I use spacers can I get it back it to et40? Or will they simply not fit?? Thanks

What car are you fitting them on, E36?
Spacers reduce offsets not increase them.

yep, lower offset means the wheels stick out more, adding spacers effectively lowers the offset even more.
depending on ride height and tyre choice they might fit, but they also might not and could need the arches modifying.

Hi I'm putting them on a e46 cab, I've got m3 matt black alloys which are 9.5j and they are in line with the arch so was gonna swap them, so anything lower than a et 40/39 don't bother getting?

They will stick out more towards the arch so you may need to do some arch work.
