I've had one. 1998 328i SE touring in burgundy.

One of the best all-round vehicles ever.

I've currently got the saloon, which I prefer, and which uses less fuel, but I'd have another touring. When cars this complete are selling for £995, it makes a mockery of newer cars.

Perhaps I should have walked away right then. Trouble was, by this point I was so keen on the car that I didn't. Instead I offered £900 for the car, to which the seller, using a spectacularly curious haggling technique, responded with the offer of £870. Gentleman that I am, I accepted.

E36s across the board are ridiculously cheap right now. I saw a stunning 318 convertible - mature owner, low miles, perfect paint, hardtop, the works - for 2k the other day. Bargain!!

My '98 R 318 auto touring with tax and test to October and ice cold AC was £400 . Granted it doesn't go like a 328 BUT it does do 35mpg in everyday driving :D

all sub £1000 328's will be aggro imo. lots of broken bit and general skimping

my 328 touring was £850. I wish i'd paid a bit more for a better one although mine has a nice spec imo

Ive been looking at buying one but I've been looking for a sport and to be honest I'm looking to spend more like 2k for a good one standard one. of Course I will then throw on the 325 manifold. That should ensure my dog has a good ride in the boot.

I have to disagree...I swapped my E34 525ix manual Touring (worth approx £850) for my 328 SE saloon and it has been fantastic...
Since getting the car over a year ago I've clocked up 20K+ miles and other than tyres and normal servicing, the only things it has needed are:
Rear Bushes
Rear door central locking actuator
Water level sensor
Pair of rear springs
1987 Henna Rot M3 (was 195bhp CAT..now more and no cat)
2001 E46 330i SE Touring (manual)

Well I just crashed mine. Someone forced me off a single track lane (blind I think) and bent my car to scrap in the process. He was sent on a driver course by the police. Obviously he'll fail and then probably lose his license which is some consolation...

His insurance company settled up front and gave me £4200 including injury claims. So now I have another 328i SE saloon! £1700, Black with cloth interior, 55k, FBMWSH - and it drives like new.

I thought my old one drove well until I tried this. It's so much tighter, rides better, grips harder, less roll, better steering. There's a lot to be said for newish dampers I think.

Anyway, I love these 328s. Might have to move onto the E46s one day I suppose... Hopefully I won't crash this one...

I have an immaculate grey cloth SE interior if anyone's interested.

Not really...
The rear bushes are a common thing on most used BMWs....especially if they have been a daily driver.
The central locking actuator I could have lived with, but I like things to be correct, so I replaced it.
The same with the level sender....
E36s are known for having broken rear springs...mine was no different and I decided to buy a new pair rather than try to find a matching one for the unbroken one (they are all colour coded and the colours have to match)...

I replaced a lot more on my E34 525ix when I bought that and my E30 325 needed all those bits (bar the springs) and more...

What's up then Mr13?

I've been spending lots of money on mine last couple of months, Bilstein B4's, new top mounts front and rear, Z4M shifter, only fitted the shifter so far, still waiting for my Eibach springs to turn up to fit all the suspension,

i've done the windscreen, replaced all the metal brake lines, rubber hoses, coolant level sensor, new hub, tyres, discs pads. A/C re gas

Then i've added a full alpina exhaust, M50 inlet, cruise control (which is now broken) 328i sport front springs

luckily someone has already changed the shockers to ewhat look like B4's it rides a bit hard.

its all dented :o: a Cat C write off in 2004 rusty tailgate and a bit of shed. but the engine is sweat and me black leathers are minty still with 158k on the clock

Fushion the thing is e36 saloons aren't worth a w*nk. tourings, cabs and coupes are worth a considerable bit more. If you need 4 doors have a proper boot. They usually come with better specs also

Yeah...kinda need 4drs (kidz), but we have an estate (Skoda) for carrying bulky stuff....

I got mine because I knew its' recent history and because it had *exactly* the right spec for me...
SE, manual, sports leather, replacement engine (Alusil), no traction (ASC+T), no aircon, sunroof and no bodykit...

May not be to everyones' taste, but suits me for now....Value doesn't mean anything as far as I'm concerned...It is never going to be a classic in the way my E30 M3 is...So long as it doesn't cost too much to run, then I'm happy...It was, after all, a sub £1k car...to my mind any money back when I sell it is a brucie bonus!!

Probably gonna to swap the Skoda estate for something like a Zafira or Grand Scenic...May then swap the 4dr for a MX5 or Z3.
