Mine is a 525 1996 with 160K on the clock and the engine has started over a 2 month or so period to sound very tappety.
The power is still there and still pulls like a train (christ did I just say that ?)
When my lad changed the oil last year (4000 ago) he put in a very good fully synthetic oil but was as thin as water.
Being a bit/lot old school, I would like to know if an oil of "a certain age" would be better in a more mature engine.
Cheers, Mart

So this is a very late e34 525i, definitely not an e39 523 (which is also a 2.5)?
Your lad has probably put in a 0W/30 or 5W30 which all the new BM's use. You are indeed better off with something thicker like a 10W/40.

Oil level ok?
I use 10/40 semi in my E34 525i and dont have any problems, change it every 5k miles. 5/30 is also perfectly ok for the engine, its better infact, I use this on my M52 engines but only because they get more welly
