Hey,

I was wondering if anyone knew what oil to use in a 1998 e39 running the m52 engine i believe.

It's a 2.8 auto.

I've always thought you should use 10w-40 however a few sites online seem to recommend 0w-40, 5w-30 (fully synthetic).

What would you recommend as being the best oil for that car? Brand wise?

after lots of reading, discusions and research on a car that will get some stick i will only use an esther based fully synthetic oil. some fully sythetics are not. its complicated science that i dont even fully understand.

right now i'll be putting in some silkolene 5w40 oil, its on special at £38 for 5L. possibly one of the best oils availble and its still stable at 120 degrees.

the subject of oil is head fuck, it really is.

new engine on not thats totaly the wrong oil to use.

people harp on that its and old engine, it needs a thicker oil. go and do some real research into oils, NOTon forums but in depth

lots of info in these links, may give you a head start

Thanks for asking this question (hijack alert!) - was wondering what to use in me 728 :D
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.

Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....
