mite be able to get my mits on one very cheap! what are they like? i have had a few e30 318is's but never had an e36 is. reason i want it is my next door neighber is a bit of a tool to say the least! and my car keeps getting dings from dumb ass parking! so want somthing that i dont really care about that is nippy and possibly fun too! so i can keep my main car minty mint!

how do they compare to the compact 318ti? are they very dull to drive?

thanks for any replys.

I like them - as a daily driver they make perfect sense. I wouldn't call them dull but they're a completely different car to the E30 318is - far more refined and a lot more grown up. Performance is OK, not a rocket ship but reasonably nippy and a fair bit better than a 316i/318i. 0-60 is slower than in the E30 due to the extra weight and takes about 10 seconds.

The 318ti compact is quicker and more lively and surprisingly practical too. They're good cars with a more raw edge than the rest of the E36 range and hold their value well but personally I'd take the coupe. A good 318is isn't very far behind the E46, still looks good with the framless windows and has a dashboard that doesn't look like it was made from recycled egg cartons.

Try both though and see what you prefer. Decent 318ti compacts seem to be easier to find. A lot have been second cars or female owned whilst the 318is has been a burberry chav fave. :D

i've driven loads of both, coupe firts yes its quite nice, i wouldnt describe them as a sports saloon in the way i would an e30, but they are a lot more sporty to drive then say a mondeo, they make very good every day cars,

compact for me doesnt quite work

i like mine, comfier and roomier than an e30, better equipped, well mine is anyway.

not fast but not slow. good on petrol if its a daily.

only things i dont like about mine is the dual climate on e36's is pretty poor IMO, just takes forever to do anything. also i wish they had put adjustable steering columns as standard on 36's...its just a 1/2 inch away from the perfect distance for me. ive got a poorly healed collarbone that clashes badly with the coupe's long seatbelt to the the b-pillar too, gets a bit uncomfy on long distance if i dont use a bit of padding.

if its just a cheap shitter you wont be worried about rust but back arches, rears of the front panel, bootlids and boot openings and gaps between the bumpers are all bad for rot.
