my mate did a simillar thing to his e39.

had it since 2003 till 2009 and never once gave it an oil change he only topped the oil up and drove it one day got about 4 feet then bang. whole thing was seized.

when i opend it up it wasnt sludge though it was more like lumps of coal that was in it.

made me laugh but he didnt see the funny side of a 2k parts and labour bill

This is why you should ignore every single manufacturers recommended oil change interval! 5,000 miles maximum! No matter what grade oil you are using. The only reason they give increased service intervals is so it looks like your getting better value for money. I know this is 'extreme service interval' but there is no way id run any car to 12,000 without oil

Mine gets oil changes every 6000, and it has done for the last 20 years and 290'000. So with the cam cover off, it's still shiny aluminium in there like it was 20 years ago.
That poor E46 might be okay with a few oil changes.

The extended Oil changes these days are no good! Been saying it for years. An e39 will go 14k between changes going by the service indicator (dependant on driving style). Even with modern oils, thats too long IMO. Andy is right. Every 6k is a safe rule.

My 530i has been sevriced by BMW on the dot all it's life. Yet when I take the oil cap off, it's horrible brown caked on shite! I certainly wouldn't want to put a flush agent through it 8O .

It's due a service now and once out of the way, the oil will be changed again in 6k's time.

Good God! I saw the pics and had to close that thread immediately. It scared me! How on earth could someone let things get into that state?

thats a @ucking discrace. my oil will be changed every 5k without fail.. using mobil 1 fully synth.. it pisses me off when people neglect cars in such a way... hell some people cant be bothered to change the airfilter and plugs when they are clearly way way way past their best.

If you do 5000 mile oil changes, you'll be wasting Mobil 1. It's good for twice that. Just use a regular brand name oil like Castrol Magnatec.

I use vauxhall branded oil, its affordable enough to dump every 5k. I wouldnt like to see 5k old mobil 1 going in the oil drainer, its plenty good enough to sell on at that milage :D

i've neve seen a 'new' engine get in that state!
i've had various old fords with crossflows in a worse state than that. the old oil used to set like tarmac over everything. massive carbon deposits that needed scraping with a screwdriver to remove and came off in hard chunks
my bro bought a rover V8 once... we were wondering where the valvegear was as none was visible, it was soon found after digging through the crap. and i do mean digging! no moving pars were visible! somehow, it was supposed to have been a running engine, it still turned over somehow!

my M30 is as clean as a whistle inside. it gest new oil and filter whenever the green lights go out on the service indicator or sooner if it's close and i'm working under there anyway. now it's on LPG, the oil comes out nearly clean as it doesn't get full of carbon :D

Wouldn't surprise me if that engine dies in the not-too-distant future... They may have cleaned it out, but there's bound to be other damage (prob corrosion) that won't have been solved.

Totally agree with not liking the long change intervals on newer cars--its a ploy by the manufacturers to woo fleet managers who only look at spreadsheets. Anyone know what the oil change intervals on a lorry or train are?

Agreed, it's generally aimed at the fleet market. A lot of private customers weren't happy about it.
And then CBS came along, stretching every interval to the limit supposedly, yet visits to the dealer became a lot more frequent!

And Wales incidently...

I've a friend who bought an old JDM red top prelude 2.2 vti from an old couple a few years ago.
He got it home ok, but noticed that VTEC (y0) was intermittant, it did run smoothly, but sometimes wouldn't rev past 5800. After a little bit of driving around once back home, and ironically, the day before a planned oil change, it went bang.
On a specialist inspection, the engine was utterly fooked. As someone else just mentioned, it was literally layers of coal that could be scraped from the internals! They also told him (not sure how they knew), that it was the original, factory filled oil! 8O

The car was 13 years, and 67k old!!

Mine gets oil and filter every 5-6K, plugs and air filter every 2nd or 3rd oil change depending what they look like.

Even when I worked at B&H autokraft I didn't see anything that bad

 that is absolutly astonishing. My old man didnt change the oil in his old Granada scorpio cosworth for 3 years and that came out a bit lumpy but nothing on comparison to that!

I work at a Daf dealer and the interval On the Daf xf105 oil change is at 90,000km. holds 35litres at £19 a litre of synthetic....

My e46 330ci get a change every 10k with mobile 1, its handy having a friend with a costco card :D

VW are ridiculous for that, extending the service intervals arbitrarily to make the cars more appealing to fleet buyers. 40k my ass.. If it was mine it's still get 10k oil changes!

surely in the long run, changing the oil and filter every 10, 15 or even 20k will pay off over waiting til 40k when the sump is full of coal 8O

i am a great fan of regular oil changes personally (evrey 3k on my e30) but I recently met an oil chemist who swore that 20k was not a problem for modern fully synthetics and i once knew a woman who went for 70k without changing the oil on a polo it was nosy and filthy inside but kept going.

That's all well and good assuming the engine actually lasts that long: my dad's new VW Passat turbodiesel company car threw a conrod through the side of the block at 8500 miles, and had to have a full new engine fitted - and he's the most careful driver on Earth! 8O
